A creative weaving of literary and visual art scattered amongst the ashen names and unknown entries of the four thousand daughters and sons of Scotland persecuted for the crime of witchcraft.
This memorial book is dedicated to the ancestors of Scotland who suffered for the crime of witchcraft. The inky act of remembrance has been brought to life in a limited edition print run, through our successful Kickstarter campaign. It serves as the resting place for the names and unknown entries from the Scottish witch trial records.
It contains visual and literary art by Creative Coven 1563, plus images from the Unknown Witch submissions. A project that successfully inspired over 625 portraits, to give a face to every witch without a name in the trial records. You can check out the project video on www.youtube.com/@rowanmorrisonstoryteller.
The emotive art within its pages is interwoven with poetry and prose gifted by a collaborative cauldron of creatives. There are images of sculptures, drawings, multi-media art, paintings and three dimensional poppets. It has been collated and designed by Rowan Morrison, artist, author and storyteller, whose remembrance work is a creative response to the Witchcraft Act of 1563.
The names and unknown entries in the book are presented in chronological order (mostly alphabetical), so you can journey through the burning times year by year, to bear witness to the witch panics and persecutions that are the shame of Scotland. The main body of work begins in 1560, with the Scottish Reformation, and ends in 1722, with the execution of Janet Horne, known as the last witch of Scotland.
There are over 80 story threads of women, men and children who suffered religious and secular witch persecution, in a time when the skies above Scotland were lit with flames, fuelled by the flesh of burning women. Its hallowed pages are a balm for a deep ancestral wound that remains unhealed. The time has come to honour the accused, not for glory, nor riches, but to redress the grave injustice inflicted upon those who suffered for the crime of witchcraft.

The Witches of Culross

The Witches of Culross was inspired by the true story of a mother and daughter who were accused of witchcraft in 17th-century Scotland. The book is a weaving of historical fact and fiction that tells the story of a mother and daughter from a small Scottish town, with the curse of second sight running through their salty veins. It is an inky cauldron that is bubbling with witch persecution, strange superstitions, curious customs, and salacious notions of demonic pacts. A folk magic grimoire, of stones, bones, herbs, and healing threads with roots in the heart of a dark past.
Written by a storytelling-wise-woman, who gives voice to the accused witches through her visceral tales of the burning times. The book is in English, with some old Scots dialogue for authenticity, and includes a dictionary with English translations.
A signed copy costs £10 for paperback or £15 for hardback, plus post and packing UK only. Both editions include an A5 print of the witch Catherine Mitchell, whose voice narrates the story that will transport you back to the burning times. Plus a small nine-knotted witches ladder bookmark made from Culross yarn and a free paper bookmark.
This book was number one best-seller in its category on Amazon and has been highly recommended by its readers.

The use of poppets in folk magic is an ancient animist craft. They can be created for many ritual purposes, including healing, harming and protection. Clay and wax were commonly used to make figures during the witch trials.
These paper poppets were made to honour Isobel Gowdie, known as the witch of Auldearn. They have been printed on heavyweight art paper, with the words of the Witchcraft Act of 1563 printed on the back for historical context.
What you will need:
Small sharp scissors
1mm hole punch or a craft knife
Metal fasteners or red thread (included)
Needle for stitching
Board to protect your surface.
How to make the poppets:
If you are using fasteners, mark a single dot on the front side of each piece to be joined. This is the easiest method and allows the poppet to move when finished. If you are using red thread, you will need to place two dots on each piece to be sewn together. Your poppets won’t move once they are stitched, but they do make unique art pieces!
Carefully cut out the pieces and lay them out as you proceed. You can refer to the pictures that show both options. Punch or cut your holes accordingly.
Join the head to the torso. Put the arms and legs together before you attach them. The right arms go on the front of the torso, with the left arms on the back. The legs are attached to the back. Nothing is set in stone; connect them however you like.
You can add small natural items to intuitively adorn them, such as feathers, wool, thorns, herbs, or a small hag stone. They can hang, frame, or be kept on an altar in remembrance of the ancestors who suffered for the crime of witchcraft.
