THE CREATIVE COVEN

WEAVING THREADS OF REMEMBERANCE OF THE WITCH HUNTS THROUGH THE CREATIVE ARTS

The Creative Coven was established to bring together women whose creative work was inspired by the Scottish witch hunts. In doing so, I have collaborated with Karen Strang, an award wining visual artist and performer and Carolyn Sutton, the creative behind Witches in Word, Not Deed. I invite other creative women to get in touch. Some big events for 2024 are brewing in the cauldron.

My Carriden Crow Woman painting was inspired by the Bo'ness Witch Hunt, where women were accused of transforming into crows.

VISION AND MISSION

Our Vision is contemporary justice for the accused witches, as a symbolic redress of historic persecution, torture, and execution of thousands (mainly women) during the Scottish witch hunts. Our Mission is to explore the historical persecution of the Scottish witch hunts, through the evocative power of the arts.

BELIEF AND VALUES

We believe in the acts of remembrance and reclamation to raise awareness of the Scottish witch hunts. We value all art forms as an active expression of political challenge to the injustice of the Witchcraft Act of 1563.

SCOTTISH WITCH HUNT EVENTS 2024

International Women’s Day Event on 8th of March

Join us in reclaiming a historic site of witch execution. On International Women’s Day, it will become a place of contemporary remembrance. The art form we will use to remember the accused will be the ancient Keening Ritual. Through our voices, we will redress the political silence around the persecution of women as witches. We invite women as individuals or in groups to take part in this remembrance and reclamation event all over the land. On this night, our voices will be heard!

The Witchcraft act of 1563 Event on 4th of June

The Witchcraft Act of 1563 became law on the 4th of June. This act gave legitimacy to malice and madness and lawfully enabled the persecution and execution of (mainly women) as witches. Join us in the reclamation of this date, as a National Day of Remembrance for all those who suffered for the crime of witchcraft. We invite you to be part of history in the making. To immerse yourself in art inspired by the Scottish witch hunts at the event exhibition and join us in the creation of a powerful participatory piece using words and evoked imagery from the Witchcraft Act.

World Day Against Witch Hunts Event on 10th of August

On this day in 2020, World Day against Witch Hunts was introduced because women in 41 countries were still being accused of witchcraft, tortured, and in some cases killed and burned. We invite you to be part of a global condemnation of the contemporary violence of those who are still being persecuted for witchcraft. Join us as we collaborate with other countries and use artistic action to raise awareness of international witch persecution around the world. It is time to silence the Hammer of Witches!
